Chicory is known in Central America as well as Amargón; Chicory; Escarole. It has tonic, laxative, diuretic effect. The decoction of roots and leaves are used to treat digestive disorders (gallstones, colic, diarrhea, dyspepsia, constipation, indigestion, loss of appetite), allergies, cystitis, fever, gout, nervousness, measles, rheumatism, and cough. Juice orally or applied as a poultice route is used to treat tumors and warts. Other popular uses: Toast root is used as a coffee substitute. The young leaves are edible and nutritious, both raw and cooked.
