BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

Native to Europe, its introduction in Peru is unknown, possibly through Tacna by European immigrants (Italians). The plant is a small shrub about 45 cm high. branch at the top and tend to bare; in the lower parts. The leaves emerge opposite, oval and between 2-5 cm wide, with entire or slightly jagged edges and hairiness. The tiny flowers, white or red, born in crowded terminals highly branched inflorescences are protected by tiny reddish leaflets. The whole plant has small glands where the aromatic essence, lemon yellow, comprising a estearopteno and two types of phenols, carvacrol and mainly thymol lesser proportion is contained. The roots and stems contain stachyose tannic substances .

Use

Oregano has various uses, either as an extract, infusion, essential oil. The most common use of this plant is the gastronomic, however it also brings great benefits to medical level, it is a bitter tonic which stimulates the growth of intestinal flora and helps fight some digestive conditions such as the case of intestinal spasms or other abdominal pains.

Importance

It is as important antioxidant, antimicrobial activity and, quite primary, antitumor, antiseptic studies and is also considered tonic and digestive.
